Set amid 36 acres of coconut palms in the far south of Mauritius, the Nira Spa at Shanti Maurice is by far the biggest and most serious on the island and brings together a globetrotting number of philosophies. The treatment menu runs from traditional Thai massage to reiki healing, Ayurvedic facials to watsu sessions, as well as a series of more intensive spa-stays focused on yoga, meditation or sleep.
It takes its Ayurveda equally seriously and whether you opt for a four-day taster or a serious three-week overhaul, the Swasthyan programme begins with a diagnosis from Dr Mishra. A once-over (build, skin type, etc) with her knowing eye is accompanied by a series of probing lifestyle questions to reveal your intrinsic dosha balance, which shapes the rest of the treatments. Days start by padding over to the open-sided pavilion for breathing exercises (belly-pulsing forceful exhales, co-ordination-testing alternate nostril breathing). The sound of waves crashing and birds chattering helps still tumbling thoughts.
